Writer: XploreReportXploreReport

When you picture the beautiful landscapes of South England, waterfalls might not be the first things that come to mind. Yet, Southern England boasts stunning cascades that attract hikers and nature lovers from far and near. From hidden tracks to well-known sites, this region offers spectacular trails and scenic views worth exploring.

If you're planning a weekend getaway or a day trip with loved ones, these breathtaking waterfalls provide a perfect escape. This article highlights the top 10 waterfalls in South England, detailing the location and what to expect during your visit.

10. St Audries bay Waterfall, Somerset

St Audries bay waterfall is one of Somersets hidden gems, tucked away along the rugged coastline, this waterfall is only accessible during low tide. The waterfall cascades down from the cliff top onto the rocky sediment making a great site for landscape photography. To access St Audries bay waterfall you will need to go via the footpaths to the beach at the St Audries bay holiday club or caravan park. It is recommended, as with all UK waterfalls, to go after heavy rainfall. After dryer spells of weather the waterfall can be merely a trickle, however after a day of rain the waterfall comes alive!

9. Clovelly Waterfall, Devon

Clovelly is a unique Devonshire fishing village, popular with tourists for its sloping cobbled streets and picturesque beauty. Many people focus on the village and become oblivious to the natural wonder of Clovelly. Just a short walk up the pebbled beach will take you to the hidden gem that is the Clovelly Beach Waterfall. The waterfall cascades off the cliff face and decends into the pebbles below, making for a stunning photo opportunity. I highly recommend visiting the Clovelly waterfall, however there is an entry fee required to access the village, in order to get to the beach you will have to pay entry. The fee contributes to the upkeep of the iconic village.

8. Venford Falls, Dartmoor

Venford Falls is one of Dartmoor’s best hidden gems! It is not as well known as most of the areas of natural beauty in Dartmoor, and hides off the beaten track resulting in a more private experience for those who want to witness the stunning spectacle. Venford falls cascades down a rocky wall lined naturally with velvety moss, and surrounded by ferns providing that fairytale woodland scene. Venford Falls is not signposted (we did say Hidden gem), to reach the location you will have to park at the Venford Reservoir car park (located north of the reservoir). From there take the trail away from the road, parallel to the waterworks and head towards the Forest that contains the spectacular waterfall! The trail is an easy 1.4km round trip.

Watersmeet Waterfall is one of Exmoors hidden gems! Tucked away in the forests surrounding Lynton and lynmouth you can find the Watersmeet circular hiking trail, on the trail there is the option to follow the woodland or river walk. If you choose the river route you will be guided to a stunning natural waterfall! The Watersmeet waterfall is especially spectacular after heavy rainfall sending gushing water rapidly through the East Lyn River to the beautiful village of Lynmouth where the River meets the sea. Watersmeet features a car park and beautiful tea room with toilet facilities. 5. Devils Cauldron, Dartmoor

Devils cauldron is another level of beautiful. The rock formations are very unique due to erosion from the stream over thousands of years. The walk to the devils cauldron is about a 30 minute loop but the surroundings are breathtaking so you will want to spend longer taking it in. The journey to the Devils cauldron is as magical as the destination, walking riverside with the ferns and moss in the gorge feels like you are in a foreign tropical paradise. Keep an eye out for trout in the river as you may see many swimming by. The Devils cauldron itself is uniquely majestic, I highly recommend this walk as it puts into perspective the under appreciated beauty of the UK!

4. Canonteign Falls, Dartmoor

The Canonteign estate is home to several waterfalls including the highest waterfall in the South West of the England, Lady Exmouth falls. The Estate has a rich history and features tranquil gardens and panoramic views over Dartmoor.
