Things to do near Bude

  1. Visit the beach and Sea pool

Bude sea pool

The Best part about Bude beach is the unique sea pool it offers. It is perfect for a leisurely swim or a bit of snorkelling. It has a steady incline with the shallow end given a boundary for kids to enjoy the safer, calm water compared to the sea, which can produce quite a swell. With that in mind the sea is ideal for surfers and bodyboarders to relish in the waves. The Beach itself is beautiful and great for a stroll. Dogs are allowed, but between 21st of May and 30th September they have to be on leads between 10am and 6pm.

2. Take a trip to Clovelly

Clovelly

Clovelly is definitely worth exploring, it is an outstandingly Beautiful town with sloped cobbled streets down to a picturesque harbour and nearby Waterfall. It is just a 30 min drive from Bude. The only downside to this magnificent location is that there is a fee to enter, but I'd still argue it is worth the one time visit as it is a true hidden gem. Down the cobbles there are wonderful views, quaint little shops and restaurants, and also a hotel for people to spend the night.

3. Take a trip to Tintagel

Tintagel

Not only is this location absolutely breath-taking but it's also historic due to its connections with King Arthur. Uncover myths and legends while you explore this dramatic segment of coastline from the castle at the top to Merlin's cave on the beach below. To reach Tintagel castle you will walk through the town where there is plenty of options for food and several shops. It's a lovely town but be prepared for the steep walk down to the castle and beach. Tintagel is managed by the English Heritage so requires a fee to cross the bridge to the castle, however the beach and Merlin's cave is accessible for free.

4. Visit St Nectars Glen

St Nectars Glen

A natural wonder, visit the enchanted woodland and complete the walk to be rewarded with the elegant 60ft Waterfall which cascades down through the naturally formed basin. There's also a cafe at the start of the walk serving traditional Cornish cream teas! There is an entrance fee for the walk which can be found here.

5. Row down the Bude canal

Bude canal

The Bude canal runs through the town towards the dam by the beachfront. The canal offers a boat hire. You can hire a row boat or pedal boat to take a little cruise at your own pace. It's quite a relaxing spot to paddle down on a warm summers day.

6. Visit Boscastle

Boscastle

Boscastle is roughly 20 minutes from bude and is well worth the short drive! Boscastle is an old village situated in a small valley. It has a darting river streaming out to the harbour. The views from the cliffs of the sea and harbour are glorious and make a great picnic spot if the weather is right. The village has a fair few shops and options for food along with a museum of witchcraft and magic which is quite a popular tourist attraction. There is a large public car park, therefore parking is no issue.

7. Surf at Widemouth bay

Widemouth bay

Widemouth bay is literally 'around the corner' from Bude. It is very scenic with views either side of the rolling waves. Speaking of the abundance of waves, there is a surf school on the beach for anyone interested in learning or having a bit of fun. There are plenty of rock pools too, boasting a large array of British sea life, perfect for exploring.

Places to eat

  1. The Bank at Bude

The Bank at Bude

There's a lot to say for this hidden gem! The Bank at Bude is quite possibly the best place I have ate at! That being said, I recommend you book early due to high demand for the Cornish twist on Spanish cuisine. The Bank offers a tapas style menu with a great amount of options alongside a vast range of cocktails and other beverages. The Sangria is the best I have had (yes, better than Spain), so a jug to share is recommended. The restaurant has an almost tropical jungle theme to it with parrots in the main area too! If you'd like a more private dining experience there are huts that can be booked out.

2. The Barge Bude

The Barge Bude

The Barge is a Tearoom/Reasturant on board a moored canal boat, which definitely makes a memorable spot to eat. They serve cooked breakfasts, coffee, Cornish cream tea and a variety of lunches including traditional fish and chips. The barge sits along the Bude canal and is very close to the beach too, watch boats row past while enjoying a tasty cooked breakfast.

3. Tasty Pasties Bude

Tasty Pasties Bude

Have you really been to Cornwall if you haven't had a Cornish pasty? This was the best pasty shop in Bude and definitely the place to go. Some pasty shops options are limited but here they have just about every pasty you could imagine, from all day breakfast pasty's to sweet apple and blackcurrant pasties! They also do Cornish cream teas to takeaway if that takes your fancy.
