Things to do In Snowdonia
Climb Mount Snowdon
An obvious choice but being on many’s bucket list it goes without saying, climbing Mount Snowdown is one of the top things to do during your visit! It is a tourist hotspot and can get very busy at the top, expect to queue for a photo at the summit! The climb isn’t too difficult but some comfy trainers or walking boots are reccomend, alternatively there is a train that takes you up, it can be a bit pricey but the views from the train are magnificent. If you’re not a fan of the crowds then I’d suggest trying a different climb, there are many beautiful mountains in the national park reaching a similar altitude to Snowdon itself. If you’re looking to bring a dog you can walk with it but they are not allowed in the train unfortunately.
2. Visit Betws y coed
Betws y coed is a magical town, it is the perfect place to stay and explore when in Snowdonia! It’s packed with natural beauty and the town itself is uniquely astounding. There is a a gushing river that flows rapidly through the town, it’s the perfect place to relax and picnic or even go for a swim. Betws y coed is quite the tourist destination however you will always find somewhere to eat as there is a vast amount of restaurants and eateries due to its popularity. There are many wonderful walks in the area, much of which are signposted near the river car park. I cannot stress enough, Betws y coed is a ‘must see’ destination! Take your time to explore the town, look in the gift shops and relax by the river!
3. Beddgelert
Another unmissable destination in snowdonia! This is more of a hidden gem and is much less popular than that of Betws y coed, however it is well worth a visit! Beddgelert is a tranquil old village in the heart of Snowdonia. It has a relaxed feel with an elegant river flowing through the cobbled village. There are some beautiful pubs and restaurants, nothing beats their outdoor riverside seating in the sunshine! There is a spectacular gelato shop too which I have mentioned below in the ‘places to eat’ section. Alongside the beautifully quaint village there is a glorious riverside walk that stretches a long way and plenty of other nearby hiking options.
4. Swallow falls
Swallow falls is a mesmerising spot that encapsulates the natural beauty of Snowdonia National park! The image isn’t even a spoiler as it is way more astonishing in real life! It gushes in all directions making for a very unique waterfall display. The entry fee is only £2 per person at the time of writing so it’s very cheap and definitely worth every penny! Bear in mind they do not take card so have cash with you, there is also a small car park next to the entrance. You do not need any specific footwear as it’s a short and relatively easy walk to the waterfall.
5. Caernarfon
Caernarfon is a bustling town located just outside edge of Snowdonia national park, however it’s worth a visit with a multitude of boutique shops and a wide variety of pubs and restaurants. The town has a rich history, it is home to a large medieval castle (Castell Caernarfon) and the centre of the town is surrounded by ancient ruins, providing an ‘old town’ vibe. I definitely recommend visiting, traverse the narrow streets and explore the history!
6. Lyn Gwynant (lake and water sports hire)
Lyn Gwynant is a large lake stunningly located at the centre of snowdonia national park, surrounded by towering mountains. The lake is home to Lyn Gwynant campsite which hosts a water sports hire that is also available for day visitors. You can hire paddle boards, kayaks, Canadian canoes amongst some other things. The campsite has access to a lake beach which is perfect for access to the water.
Alternatively if you have your own equipment and do not need to hire, there are many small coves around the lake to park alongside and access the water.
7. Get walking
You can never run out of things to do in Snowdonia really, due to the shear amount of jaw droppingly beautiful walks on offer. There are signposted walking routes and hikes covering the whole national park each with so much to offer. There’s an array of river walks alongside the mesmerising rapids, for the more seasoned hiker there are mountains to climb! Any spare time can be filled with a walk through some of the most scenic areas the UK has to offer!
Places to eat
Glaslyn Artisan ice cream and pizza
Glaslyn is located in Beddgelert and is probably the most popular place in the village. They sell a huge range of ice creams and sorbets that are absolutely delicious. There is often a queue as the ice creams here are sought after by tourists and locals. Next door they also own a pizzeria, that too is popular. I highly recommend trying this Italian inspired slice of Beddgelert, you won’t regret it!
2. Y Stablau - Stables bar (Betws y coed)
The Stabled bar in Betws y coed is a quality pub and bar located beneath the Royal Oak hotel. Both the outdoor area and inside is large and decorated beautifully. They have a large menu and the prices are reasonable for that of a tourist hotspot, the food is delicious too! This place is perfect for a lunchtime break while exploring Betws y coed, or a evening meal and drinks.
3. Hen Siop Pont-Y-Pair (Fish and chips) (Betws y coed)
A good fish and chip shop located right next to the river in Betws y coed. The fish and chips are very nice and there are plenty of options on the menu. You can even order chicken curry, chilli con carne, stewed steak and pulled pork over chips! The riverside is the perfect place to sit and enjoy a fish and chips while listening to the waterfalls gushing.
4. FRÂN LAS
A lovely coffee shop located in Llanberis, the town at the bottom of Mount Snowdon. They sell tasty coffee, pastries, cakes and lunchtime food such as bagels and sandwiches etc. The food is amazing, and i reccomend the cinnamon swirl as it’s the best one I have ever had, and I’m quite the pastry connoisseur! I didn’t even realise at the time but after researching I found that Frân Las is actually 100% vegan! They really have mastered vegan food and created some delicious options. The cafe is perfect for a coffee and bite to eat after your descent from mount snowdon wether it’s walking or by train. The cafe is located along the middle of the high street.
5. Y Bistro yn yr Hebog
A lovely relaxed restaurant set alongside the beautiful river in Beddgelert, Y Bistro yn yr Hebog is a great place to enjoy some drinks or dine! There is outdoor seating and a mini bar alongside the river with the backdrop of mountains, which is perfect for a sunny day. There is also plenty of indoor seating. The menu is a little on the expensive side but the food is high quality and delicious. The drinks menu is large with a great selection of local beverages and other popular beers, wines and cocktails. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a nice restaurant to accommodate your evening, or even if you’re looking for a few afternoon drinks.
