The Perfect Devonshire Getaway…

Things to do near Sidmouth

1. Explore the town

Sidmouth town

Sidmouth town is thriving, especially in the summer months. It's not the usual seaside town selling overpriced inflatables etc. It's definitely worth bringing some spending money as there are some really nice independent shops selling all sorts of things from florists to home decor. There is a wide range of Cafes, pubs and restaurants which I will list some favourites, in the 'Places to eat' section of the article.

2. The Beach

Sidmouth beach

Sidmouth has a large stretch of beach adjacent to the town. You will find the beach has a steep pebbly incline down to the sea, it makes a great spot to enjoy some fish and chips or a picnic while watching the waves crash. Near Jacob's ladder there is another beach that's flatter and popular with swimmers in summer. There is also the huge stretch of coastline by the cliffs, however it can be dangerous due to rocks often falling. This is popular with fishermen as there is an estuary close and it's much more quiet that end.

3. Connaught Gardens

Connaught Gardens

The historic Connaught gardens are accessible by the main coastal path via a small climb up Jacob's ladder. Connaught gardens offers impressive views from above the beautiful Jacob's ladder beach. It is a great spot to capture a picture, especially with the staggering red cliffs in the background. As expected, inside the garden there is a stunning array of plants creating a scenic surrounding and a lovely spot to relax on the benches. There is also a small cafe in the gardens to grab a drink or bite to eat.

4. Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey sanctuary, Sidmouth

The donkey sanctuary is a charity that protects and rescues donkeys nationally and internationally. The donkey sanctuary in Sidmouth has plenty of fields full of donkeys to visit and pet, you can even adopt one. On the site there is a lovely cafe, which sells some beautiful cakes and cofee along with meals for lunch. The view from the cafe is astounding, with the donkeys and the sea in the horizon, it makes a great place to relax. The Sanctuary also has a gift shop and play area for children. The car park is free and there is no entry free. As it is a charity donations are happily accepted. But it really does make a great and inexpensive day out.

5. Budleigh Salterton

Budleigh Salterton

Budleigh saterton is truly a hidden gem. It is a small seaside village not far from Sidmouth. The high street is small but has a few nice cafes, a really nice bakery and of course, a fish and chip shop. The town also has several shops to ponder however the star of the show is the beach. The beach meets the glorious River Otter which elegantly flows through the wetlands providing picturesque panoramic views. The River Otter is popular with kayakers and paddle boarders due to the calm waters traversing through the nature reserve, filled with eye catching wildlife. The sea is usually calm offering a great place to swim and again, it makes a great location to kayak or paddle board. If you are close by then Budleigh salterton is more than worth a visit.

6. Beer

Beer, Devon

Another outstandingly exquisite seaside town. The cobbled streets plus the picture perfect cove combine man-made beauty with nature's. Views from the sea front pub gardens are extraordinary, and it only makes sense to enjoy a beer when in Beer. Beer is traditionally a fishing town and fresh fish is sold right on the beach! You can also hire your own boat to take out if you are partial to a spot of fishing. The beach front does have several places to eat and there are benches on the beach for customers. I highly recommend taking a short trip to Beer, it's an all round beautiful seaside village.

Places to Eat

  1. Dukes Inn

Pubs in Sidmouth

The Dukes Inn is situated along the sea front a you first enter the town. Being the first restaurant/pub you see when entering the town, it can become quite busy. They have a good sized beer garden that is bustling in the summer as it is an ideal spot to chill out. The restaurant is well decorated and serves a range of food sourced in the south west. The menu changes with the seasons and offers seafood, meat and veggie options alongside lighter bites and sides if you are just wanting a snack.

2. The bagel shop

They are also quite passionate about thier coffee, they use local cofee beans from a Sidmouth roaster and serve in a range of ways including iced coffees and frappes. The bagel shop is perfect for a quick tasty lunch to take out to the beach.
