Things to do near Wells
Wells cathedral
Wells is most well known for the iconic Cathedral, it really showcases breathtaking ancient architecture being built nearly 1000 years ago! Every intricate detail displays pure beauty and I definitely recommend visiting. To the front of the cathedral is a large green which is great to relax on with a picnic or some drinks in the summer and enjoy the view. When walking around the city you can see the cathedral looming over it making a stunning backdrop. The Cathedral hosts many events/shows throughout the year along with guided tours and is regularly open for visitors.
2. Explore the City and Market
Wells City is full of mesmerising historical buildings and beauty. The Market is open every Wednesday and Saturday, it has been held since the twelfth century. Have a ponder around the stalls and be transported back in time, surrounded by ancient architecture. Through the cobbled high street you'll find plenty of shops to have a look around, there are also a lot of lovely spots for food, some of which you'll find at the bottom of this article.
3. Bishops Palace & Gardens
Upon exploring the city you may find this beauty, Bishops Palace. It's the home of the Bishop of Bath and Wells and is open to the public to explore. There is a fee for entering the palace and gardens however this does allow you to return again in the same year for free. Without the ticket you can still walk around the moated perimeter occupied by elegant Swans. You can also visit a section of the inner palace and go to the top of the lookout tower. The ticket is also worth it in my opinion as you can take a full look around the magnificent palace and the gardens are outstanding, a great spot to bring a picnic and relax in the peace and tranquility.
4. Visit Cheddar gorge
Cheddar gorge could be described as a National wonder or even international due to being the home of one of the world most renowned foods (Yes, the cheese!). The gorge itself boasts staggering views from the top, of the Somerset levels. You can visit the Cheddar caves in which they sometimes host special events and there are also many activities to take part In. I have a more in depth report of things to do in Cheddar (there's a lot to do!) on my separate blog.
5. Ebbor gorge
That's right, another Gorge! Ebbor has a outstanding view of a forest canopy overlooking the stunning mendips. There is a 4.7km circular hiking route which will show you all of the essential sights throughout the prehistoric Gorge. Along this walk you will also cross Wookey hole. A tourist attraction that is a great family day out to explore more of the famous caves in the area.
6. Visit Glastonbury
You may have heard of Glastonbury due to hosting 'the worlds biggest music festival', but on a regular day it still offers plenty! The whole town is full of myth and wonder, it definitely offers something different to other towns. Walk up the Tor to get panoramic views of the Somerset levels, a great spot for a picnic. Traverse the unique shops the town has to offer, from healing crystals to fairy shops... you will find all sorts to ponder upon. The town itself is of good size and has a lot to look at and plenty of food options so you can spend quite some time there, definitely worth a visit.
Places to eat
The Queen Victoria

The Queen Victoria is a 10 minute drive from Wells an also located next to the Ebbor gorge walking route in a small village called Priddy. The Pub serves a nice range of home cooked meals at a reasonable price. The pub has a beer garden and outside huts to sit in. Due to being surrounded by beautiful walks they also welcome dogs, so many dog walkers will stop in there for food or drink afterwards. As you can see from the image above, the pub does not hold back with Christmas decorations! Over Christmas is a great time to visit to see the iconic and infamous Christmas lights, however be warned, it's is extremely busy at Christmas due to its popularity so make sure to book!
2. Fosso lounge
Fosso lounge is a part of the 'Lounges' franchise, I would usually steer away from recommending chain businesses however on this occasion I have to include it. It is a very nice place to stop for food or even just to have a coffee or some drinks. The whole restaurant is decorated really well with a vibrant feel to it, full of pictures and covered with eye catching design. The food is really good and there is a lot to choose from on the menu, wether you came for just a light bite or even a three course meal. They offer a large array of cocktails for late night drinks in the town too! The restaurant is very popular and not only with humans, as dogs are also welcome!
3. The Swan hotel (restaurant)
If you are searching for a more lavish meal The restaurant at the Swan hotel is a great option, serving locally sourced food with a stylish menu. All of the ingredients are sourced within a 25 mile radius. The restaurant serves 'traditional British food with a modern twist'. The Swan hotel is located near the cathedral and market, it even has a lovely view of the cathedral from its outdoor seating when the weather is right! They also host an afternoon tea to indulge in if that takes your fancy!
